Hon. Justice (Dr.) Smokin Wanjala was appointed on 16th June, 2011 and assumed office on 26th August, 2011 as a Judge of the Supreme Court. He is theDirector Kenya Judiciary Academy (KJA) and heads the Supreme Court Academy Portfolio.
Prior to his appointment, he served as the Assistant Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (2004-2009), Law Lecturer and later, Senior Lecturer at the University of Nairobi (1986-2004).
He served as a Commissioner of the Judicial Service Commission (2011-2016),and the Joint Secretary to the Commission on Illegally and Irregularly Acquired Public Land (the Ndung’u Commission, 2003). Hon. Justice Smokin Wanjala was the Chairman of the Public Complaints Committee on the Environment (2002-2004), under the National Environment and Management Authority (NEMA); and a founder member of the Centre for Law and Research International (CLARION) which pioneered Civic Education in the Country. He is a member of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences; visiting lecturer at the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA); and member of the Advisory Board of Columbia Global Centres – Nairobi.
He has been awarded the National Honour of the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) and was featured in “Marquis Who’s Who”, 25th Edition(2008).
He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi, Post-Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law, Master of Laws (LLM) from Columbia University, and Doctorate in Law (PhD) from the University of Ghent.
