Hon. Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu was appointed on 27th October, 2016 and assumed office on 28th October, 2016 as the Deputy Chief Justice and Vice President of the Supreme Court. She deputises the Chief Justice and is responsible for the co-ordination of the overall performance and supervision of the Supreme Court and the entire Judiciary.
Prior to her appointment, she served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal, and Judge of the High Court. She served as a Director of the Board and Chair of the Legal and Human Resource Committee of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company; Deputy Chairperson of the Energy Tribunal; Board Secretary of the Electricity Regulatory Board of Kenya; Senior Legal Officer in the insurance sector; and practiced law in various law firms.
She also served as a Commissioner of the Judicial Service Commission (2017-2022); Acting Chief Justice from 12th January, 2021 to 21st May, 2021; theJudiciary Ombudsman; and the Chair of the Implementation Monitoring Committee of the Sustaining Judiciary Transformation Framework (SJT). Hon. Lady Justice Philomena Mwilu is the Vice Chairperson of the Judiciary Leadership Team (JLT), and Chair of the Judiciary Management Committee. She was awarded the National Honour of the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH).
She is an Advocate of the High Court Kenya, holds both Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Nairobi and Post-Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
